EuroChem safeguards biodiversity in Brazil
EuroChem implements a comprehensive environmental programme, which includes preserving biodiversity in the regions where it operates. The objective is to protect the natural habitat of local flora and fauna for their continued growth and reproduction. To this end, EuroChem conducts regular monitoring of flora and fauna, as well as implements environmental education programmes for local communities.
For example, in the state of Minas Gerais, where the Serra do Salitre phosphate complex was launched in March 2024, we monitor the endangered Brazilian merganser.
As part of the monitoring process, the EuroChem environmental experts track the status of the species during the breeding period and its interactions within the local ecosystem. The team keeps contact with the neighbours and owners of the monitored areas sharing the information about the programme, and exchanging data on bird spotting outside of the reproductive period.
The biodiversity protection initiative also covers other species found in the region, including the toucan, paca and birds of prey.
The programme also aims to enhance children’s environmental awareness. EuroChem provides interactive lessons for pupils on the significance of preserving natural resources, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles to show the Brazilian merganser’s habitat, and facilitates research-oriented events and competitions, wherein students propose measures for the merganser’s conservation.
“We work with both endangered fauna and other topics related to biodiversity, whether it’s flora, green spaces or waste issues. This includes environmental education in general.”
Sarah Santos da Silva,
Environmental Control Specialist at Serra do Salitre complex
Up to 300 pupils from a variety of educational institutions participated in educational activities over the last several months.
“The Brazilian merganser project represents a multifaceted initiative that extends beyond the mere protection of an endangered species. In addition to this, it serves to advance environmental education, encourage sustainable practices and facilitate the development of a culture of conservation in Serra do Salitre Municipality. Our Department of Education views this partnership as a crucial element in the future development of our city and in the cultivation of citizens who possess a deep understanding of and dedication to the natural world”.
Heide Alves,
Education Coordinator in the Municipality of Serra do Salitre
The merganser monitoring programme has facilitated the collection of significant data on this species, while also training a young generation of citizens who are aware of and committed to nature conservation. The data and the attainment of promising results serve to confirm the fundamental role played by the programme in the protection of the endangered fauna in the region.
