Victoria wins EuroChem Cup as tournament comes to a close

Novomoskovsk, Russia, May 29, 2018 – Home team Victoria Novomoskovsk won the EuroChem Cup on Tuesday, providing a thrilling finale to an event known unofficially as the ice hockey world championships for kids.

An important community-building initiative, the EuroChem Cup was created in 2013, initially incorporating teams of children aged 10-12 from areas where the company operates around the world but subsequently broadening to attract even more international teams.

Victoria crushed all-comers en route to the Cup, sweeping aside the Antwerp Phantoms, the Nevinnomyssk Huskies, the Severstal Cherepovets, and Sever Kovdor before beating Lithuania’s Klaipeda 10-2 in the final. It was a second title for the host team, which first won the event in 2016. The full results table can be found here.

Ice hockey fans and players from all over the world packed the Jubilee Ice Palace in Novomoskovsk as Tula Region Governor Alexei Dyumin took to the stage, accompanied by legends of the sport, including two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav “Slava” Fetisov, and double Olympic medalist Pavel Bure.

The Governor officially congratulated the 12 teams from eight nations for their role in making the competition an overwhelming success.

“Victoria came out on top. The best team won,” he declared, adding to deafening applause that the four-day tournament showed how sport can overcome politics: “Despite everything that’s going on in the international arena we have shown we are one big, friendly family.”

“Novomoskovsk can rightly claim to be the center of world hockey for juniors,” said EuroChem Russia’s General Director Igor Nechaev. “We are delighted to have hosted the tournament here.”

For the first time ever, the EuroChem Cup featured a team from the United States. The Albany Capitals finished 10th out of 12 with a 1-3 record, an outstanding achievement as most of the players were a year younger than their opponents.

“It’s been an amazing experience, from the organization point of view right down to the quality of the hockey,” said Brad Chartrand, the team’s head coach. “We thank the organizers for their hospitality and professionalism. We can’t wait to come back next year.”

Novomoskovsk, a city of 130,000 located 150 miles/220 kilometers south of Moscow, is the base for one of EuroChem’s key production facilities and the company funded the construction of the ice rink at which the tournament is played.
