EuroChem Cup ice hockey tournament expands to China, Italy for 2019
Zug, Switzerland, April 30, 2019 – China and Italy will be represented for the first time this year at the EuroChem Cup, one of the world’s premier ice hockey tournaments for children.
The competition, for kids aged 10-12, is held May 26-29 in Novomoskovsk, Russia, and brings together teams from countries where EuroChem has a presence around the world. In all, 14 teams from 10 nations are taking part.
“A true hockey bonanza awaits on the ice of the Jubilee Arena,” said Igor Nechaev, the General Director of MCC EuroChem in Russia. “We cannot wait for the action to start, for the goals to fly in, the great saves to be made.”
He added: “The broader aim of the event is to encourage friendship and team spirit, and to promote a healthy lifestyle and build bridges between societies. At EuroChem we believe in tapping the power of sport to improve lives.”
For the first time, the competition has received the backing of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
“The IIHF strongly encourages the development of ice hockey at the grass-roots level,” said IIHF President René Fasel. “The EuroChem Cup is a fantastic example of how sport can bring together young people from around the world to compete, to make friends, and to embrace new cultures,” he added.
In addition to regular participants from Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, Switzerland, and the United States, the seventh edition of the EuroChem Cup features the exciting addition of Kunlun Red Star from China and the HLBA Gladiators from Aosta, Italy.
Kunlun Red Star is a pro hockey club that plays in the KHL, and the appearance of its youth team at the EuroChem Cup is testament to the rise of winter sports in China ahead of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
The HLBA Gladiators come from the northwestern Italian province of Aosta, a renowned center of hockey talent in the country and close to Turin, host city of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
